Do Babies Get Acid Reflux Disease?

Yes, babies can have acid reflux disease. First, acid reflux, also called Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease.(GERD) It is a term that describes the condition where the stomach’s contents flow into the esophagus. This is caused by a relaxing of the muscle that separates the stomach from the esophagus, a muscle that’s supposed to remain tightly closed until you swallow. But, in babies, this muscle is still developing and may not be able to work right. This usually results in acid reflux disease in babies and this causes the baby to spit up more than usual. If your baby exhibits acid reflux, it’s important for you to stay calm, as acid reflux disease in baby is very common. The condition usually goes away after a year to a year and a half, but if you are still unsure if your baby’s condition is normal it is important to call your pediatrician for medical advice.

It’s very common for babies to spit up or to have a wet burp after feeding. If the spit up also has other symptoms, such as fever, pain or discomfort than you should see your pediatrician as soon as possible. If you feel that the acid reflux disease in your baby isn’t normal, your pediatrician will examine your baby for problems such as pain, feeling uncomfortable, being very particular in their eating habits, slow weight gain and sleep problems.

Acid reflux disease in babies can cause other problems if not monitored closely. For example, serious cases of acid reflux can cause sinus infections, ear problems, asthma, low weight gain and esophagi is. If these problems should show up, your doctor may need to resort to medications and possible surgery to fix the problem. Your doctor may want to first recommend some home care techniques before medication or surgery is considered an option.

Are there Home Care Techniques for Babies with Acid Reflux Disease?

There are some home care techniques for acid reflux disease in babies and they usually involve a certain diet. For example, breast milk is excellent for infants with acid reflux.  Some babies are sensitive to certain foods and it’s important to keep a keen eye on your baby’s diet to determine if it’s the cause of acid reflux. Your doctor may also recommend you to feed your baby slowly and to recommend meals that are more frequent. It is important, too, to burp your baby frequently. I know from personal experience and being a father of 4 how important it is to get a good burp from your baby. You can save yourself a lot of sleep and aggravation by burping them properly. Keep your baby upright and consult your doctor about sleep positioning, as this, too, can affect acid reflux disease in babies.

If the home care techniques don’t work then your doctor may recommend some over the counter or prescribe some drugs that can help. These are only for extreme cases, however. It is important to note that you should never attempt any cures or medications without first talking your doctor. Babies are very sensitive and you wouldn’t want to harm your baby just because you’re trying to stop the acid reflux.

Hi, my name is Christian Lucas and I have been suffering from Acid Reflux for a long time. Finally, I had enough and researched different ways for me to stop having acid reflux issues. For me it was watching the foods that I eat. I love to eat lamb but I realized that every time I did, I was in for a long and painful evening. These acid reflux articles and heartburn book reviews are basically to discuss different ways to stop heartburn and pass the information onto other people.

One book that I did find was “Stop Acid Reflux Now!” I read the content on the website and decided to give the book a try. I figured why not, if it can save me a trip to the drug store to buy some expensive acid reflux drugs or a trip to the doctor so he can send me to get even more expensive heartburn drugs.
